Setting new standards for targeted HIV prevention: the Avahan initiative in India

By Bobby Shady | 21 May, 2010

In preparation for Tuesday's launch event, "Turning off the Tap," with special guests from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the India AIDS Initiative: Avahan, we will be posting a series of editorials written about Avahan. In this piece, Dr. Peter Piot, former Executive Director of UNAIDS, argues that Avahan has set new standards for HIV prevention by demonstrating that HIV prevention programs must be focused where the virus is primarily spreading and that investments in multi-prong monitoring and evaluation are essential. Piot also notes that Avahan is unique in its powerful synergies between evidence informed strategy, community empowerment, structural interventions and business style management, and that it has "convincingly demonstrated" that it is indeed possible to bring prevention interventions in marginalized populations to very large scale.
