By Rishi Rattan | 13 Feb, 2017

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

CONTACT: . URL: gsmsg.org

OBJECTIVE: Support existing, in-country surgical infrastructure with surgical clinical and education support as requested directly by Kurdish surgeons, hospitals, and the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).

OVERVIEW: The Global Surgical and Medical Support Group (GSMSG) is a 501c3 non-profit approved by the IRS and has been the preferred, KRG-trusted provider of top tier (US Board Certified) surgical services to the population affected by ISIS in Northern Iraq for the past 2+ years. To date we have performed over a hundred complex surgeries and tended to thousands of patients in Northern Iraq. GSMSG's unique leadership composition, networks, and partnerships allow us to run full scale surgical operations at forward secure locations in a manner that no other organization is able to. Read about previous works and see more at www.GSMSG.org or feel free to contact us directly at .

WHO: Active and retired board-eligible/board-certified General Surgery, Gynecology (Oncology), Neurological Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Primary care and EM also needed.

WHEN: May 19, 2017 - May 28, 2017 (#9). June 17, 2017 - July 1, 2017 (#10). You may arrive/depart any time in that window.

WHERE: Flying into Erbil, Iraq (airport code EBL) via major airlines such as Lufthansa. From there you will be staying at a secured hotel determined by our security networks and advisors. The surgical operating rooms are located at hospitals within 5 minutes of the hotel and that our group has routinely used in the past.

OPERATIONS: The hospitals that our teams work at are ones that we have worked at before and are equipped with the equipment necessary for most major/complex procedures (such as Ilizarof orthopaedic procedures). If you have any questions about equipment in particular, please do not hesitate to contact us.

CONTINUITY: You will be joining full-time Kurdish surgical teams in a supporting role inside Kurdish hospitals. They manage pre-, peri-, and post-operative issues for all patients year-round.

TEAM COORDINATION: At all times the team moves as one group with the security team. At no point, unless specifically requested by a surgeon themself, will any team member be separated from the larger group or without a security team member. All team members stay in the same hotel.

COMMUNICATIONS: Our teams have 24/7 wifi connectivity which will enable you to maintain communication links to family and friends back home.

COST: Please note that all of your expenses are tax-deductible. Round trip airfare is usually $1300 from the US. Cost per night in the hotel = $70. Estimated cost per day for food and other expenses = $20. We don't anticipate any other costs based on prior trips though we do recommend everyone bring $500 cash as emergency funds.

QUESTIONS: If you have any other questions, again do not hesitate to contact us at .
