Global Surgery 2013. Lancet Commission

By Janet A DEWAN PhD CRNA | 19 Aug, 2015

Here is link to the entire , free access, Lancet report on global surgery including goals set for 2030, promulgated this month. I am a little impatient at the long range dating (2030) for goals, but that does allow policy makers to envision the complexity of the steps required to develop the infrastructure, including skilled personnel, needed for safe surgical care. . The evidence presented poses strong arguments for obliging targeted essential surgical care improvements as a basic component of obligations under the right to health. The entire report is 56 pages but it begins with an executive summary.

Awesome to see this being discussed here! I've attached the report's policy briefs for those with limited time.

Overview- a 4-page overview of the report, focusing on its key messages
Monitoring- a discussion of the commission's indicators for monitoring access to safe surgery & anesthesia
LMICs- a discussion of actions and opportunities for LMIC policymakers
International Community- a discussion of actions and opportunities for HIC partners
Investing in Surgery and Anesthesia- a summary of the Commission's economic findings, including the financial costs and benefits of investing in surgery

Also attached are reference files of the Commission's six indicators and a template for a National Surgical Plan.

Thanks to help from the IFMSA, these will soon be available in French, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese!

Happy to discuss any questions that come up.
