The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University has joined a consortium of universities working to develop the first sustainable graduate medical education programs in the country of Rwanda. Since emerging from its horrific genocide in 1994, Rwanda has made incredible strides in development, and its government has especially focused on improvements in the health sector. As part of its efforts to strengthen human resources for health in the country, the Rwandan Ministry of Health is partnering with 11 US academic medical centers to develop the first sustainable residency programs in the country. Brown University is currently the lead US institution for the Emergency Medicine component of the program. Starting in August 2012, we will be sponsoring a full time Emergency Physician on the ground in Rwanda for a one year fellowship, who will work with Rwandan colleagues and other academic institutions to train the very first class of Rwandan emergency medicine residents.
Qualifications: BE/BC Emergency Physician with enthusiasm for working in a developing country, cultural flexibility and competence, and a passion for making a positive contribution to Rwanda’s healthcare delivery system. Prior global health experience and French language skills a plus. Both new EM graduates and senior emergency physicians welcome to apply.
Salary and Benefits: Salary and health benefits for US faculty will be provided by the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brown University and will be competitive with EM fellowships across the United States. Malpractice insurance and medical licensure will be provided by the Rwanda Ministry of Health.
