Bio

Carel IJsselmuiden is a physician and epidemiologist who worked in rural, peri-urban and urban public health in South Africa since 1980, and has now moved to a global NGO in Switzerland. Rural medicine and public health (1980-6); deputy medical officer of health for Johannesburg (1987-90); senior lecturer (Medical University of Southern Africa, MEDUNSA, 1991-1995); professor and head of community health and founding director of the School of Health Systems and Public Health, University of Pretoria (1995-2003); Executive Director of COHRED (2004+). His main interests were in childhood malnutrition, immunisation and health care; then HIV/AIDS and environmental health; then in health systems and public health education; now in ethics of international collaborative research and in the potential of systems of research and innovation to improve health, reduce poverty and create sustainable development.
