Kim-Son was born in Vietnam, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and studied at Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

He is currently finishing an oncology-hematology fellowship at Stanford University. Having worked in Vietnam in HIV/AIDS, palliative care, and cancer care for over a decade, Kim-Son is an assistant director for the Vietnam Program of the American Society of Clinical Oncology International Program/Health Volunteers Oversea. He conducts research in lung cancer and cancer care delivery systems, with the ultimate goal of improving cancer care in developing countries.
