Patti Abbott is a nurse with a PhD in Operations Analysis. She has been at Johns Hopkins since 2003. Prior to 2003, she was the Director of Graduate Informatics Programs at the University Of Maryland School Of Nursing, Baltimore. She has been a nurse since 1977 and has been an Informatician since 1998. Patti has a joint appointment between the JHUSOM and the JHUSON and is the PI on one HITECH grant and co-PI on a second. Both of these HITECH grants from ONC are focused upon HIT Workforce. Dr. Abbott also has a NIH funded telehomecare study where she is working with community-dwelling African American congestive heart failure patients. Using a FDA approved device in the home connected by 4G WiMax, she is studying the impact of tele-supported care and education on heart failure knowledge and self-management skills. Patti is also the Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Knowledge Management at Hopkins (nicknamed the “KIMS” Center). As part of her work with KIMS, she manages the Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery, a very low bandwidth electronic community of practice that facilitates knowledge exchange and interaction in nearly 3,000 participants from 158 countries. This community of practice is part of the Knowledge Gateway – an electronic dissemination platform supported by WHO, USAID, and the UNFPA. She is currently involved with mHealth research in Guatemala.
